Doctor Who's "Joy," the seventh episode of the 60th-anniversary specials, promised a return to classic Whovian adventures. Instead, it delivered a chaotic, uneven experience that felt less like a joyous celebration and more like forced fun. While there were moments of brilliance, the episode ultimately stumbled under the weight of its own ambition and a somewhat muddled plot.

A Whirlwind of Whimsy (That Doesn't Quite Work)

The episode throws the Doctor, along with companions Kate Stewart and the returning companion, (depending on the current season), into a dizzying array of scenarios. From bizarre alien creatures to a seemingly endless parade of quirky characters, "Joy" attempts to evoke the whimsical energy of classic Who. However, this frantic pacing often overshadows character development and plot coherence. The sheer volume of events happening simultaneously leaves the viewer feeling overwhelmed rather than entertained.

The Problem with Too Much, Too Soon

The rapid-fire succession of events prevents any single element from truly landing. The alien threat, for example, is introduced and dispatched with such speed that its impact is minimized. While the returning companion (depending on the current season) is welcome, their role in "Joy" feels somewhat underutilized. Their interactions with the Doctor are limited, and their personal arc takes a backseat to the frantic events unfolding around them. This is a recurring problem throughout the episode: the numerous characters introduced feel like mere plot devices rather than fully realized individuals. Each character's contribution to the overall narrative is minimal, creating a sense of detachment from the events on screen.

The Weight of Nostalgia

"Joy" clearly attempts to tap into the nostalgia of long-time fans by incorporating elements reminiscent of classic Who. However, this reliance on nostalgia feels forced at times.
